Wokingham, Bracknell & Districts Mencap is a user-led local charity that works with people with learning disabilities and Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), their families and carers. We advocate rights and services for our members and work with local authorities to make sure that they have their voices heard. Our aim is to value the individual and enable people to reach their potential. We work in a person-centred approach and constantly look for new ideas and projects.
Why the community needs usAll our activities and services aim to help people with learning difficulties and ASD to have a choice in what they do and how they do it, be involved in decisions about their lives, learn new skills and improve existing ones, have opportunities for employment, have respect for themselves and for what they can do, socialise with other people and be involved in the community, whilst having fun.
Our impact on the communityEvery year we provide activities and support to 360 families, which is over 1100 individuals. Our services for adults and children vary from art and craft classes, drop-in sessions, educational programmes to events and outings. We provide family carers with information, support and respite. As one carer said "Thank you for everything you have done. Life was becoming unbearable. We are so grateful".
We require motivated and enthusiastic people to volunteer and help us run our clubs and activities, help us with fundraising and admin, and to join our board of trustees.
