Fences & Frontiers

Fences & Frontiers  is a London based charity aiming to make the city a more welcoming, supportive and inspiring place for refugees and asylum seekers to live and settle. They do this by running cultural, physical, and educational activities ranging from countryside walks to museum visits, city farm trips to nights at the theatre, with the aim that these trips bring people together in the spirit of friendship and solidarity.

Lewis Garland, Founder and Chair of Fences & Frontiers ( @FencesFrontierswho has worked with Localgiving for a number of years told us: “As a small, grassroots charity being able to claim Gift Aid through Localgiving and being able to use their simple and intuitive platform for people to donate and fundraise for us is hugely beneficial.”

Their ’Never Walk Alone’ project organises monthly walks in London and the surrounding countryside. Running since March 2018, they alternate between urban and rural trails, giving walkers the opportunity to take in spectacular views and explore places of historical and cultural interest they may never have realised were on their doorstep.

These walks provide an opportunity to get to know people from different areas of London and backgrounds and help to foster lasting friendships that outlive the project. And all walkers from refugee and new community backgrounds have their transport costs covered.

Another project, ‘London, Museums, and me’ gives children from refugee backgrounds, and their families, the chance to explore London's museums and cultural attractions. Taking place once every 6-8 weeks throughout the year. Fences & Frontiers covers all transport costs for participants, as well as providing refreshments.

Fences & Frontiers has had a huge surge of interest in recent months. However, to open up their projects to new people, they now need to up their fundraising! As an entirely volunteer led, grassroots organisation, their services are reliant on the kindness and generosity of our donors. On August 11th a group of their team are climbing the UK's tallest mountain, Ben Nevis and are looking to raise £1,345 through this fundraiser - that's £1 per metre of the mountain!

Lewis Garland, who is also one of the team climbing Ben Nevis, told us: "Your support will help us provide opportunities for people to build friendships, practice English, immerse themselves in nature and explore our city. It will help us give people moments of real joy, and escape, in an incredibly challenging time in their lives".
