About the appeal

This year we are very proud to announce the 25th anniversary of Cwm Taf People First.

It seems like just a blink of an eye ago that our two founders, Lynne Evans and Dawn Price, shared that early vision to create an organisation that would fight for the rights of people with a learning disability, to be in control of their own lives, to be listened to, to make their own choices, and be included in society.

It didn’t seem much to ask, but at the time Lynne describes how in the local day centre she attended:

“people with learning disabilities were segregated from staff, seated at separate tables and how there was always a feeling of ‘them and us’”

The growth of the People First movement was a chance for Lynne, Dawn (and the small band of other early founders) to create the local ‘Rhondda Cynon Taff People First’ self-advocacy group, to ensure people with a learning disability could have the confidence, skills and support to stand up and be counted, to speak out on services that affected them, and to have a greater say over the important decisions that affected their lives.

25 years later, and so much has been achieved. ‘Cwm Taf People First’ as it is now known, has expanded and now employs 10 staff (5 of whom have a learning disability) and now incorporates members in both Merthyr Tydfil and Blaenau Gwent supporting 120 adults with a learning disability each year.

Our work is diverse and focused on changing attitudes, tackling inequalities (in terms of health, employment, housing, education and much more) and educating those in positions of authority to understand better the needs and rights of people with a learning disability.
