About the appeal

Please help The Conservation Volunteers at Hollybush build a toilet block so there are enough toilets for everyone on site.

Anyone who has visited Hollybush on a busy afternoon or been to one of the major events knows that there is often a queue for the toilet and for many of our volunteers and visitors the climb up to the two cubicles on the middle floor is either not possible or far from easy.

There has been steady investment in Hollybush over the years, Veolia funded major improvements in 2020-22 saw the structural repairs to the main building, main fencing replacement, significant improvements to the surfacing of car park and pathways throughout the site and improvements to the garden. The site is much more accessible, and we can welcome more people.

With routinely 60 -70 people onsite, the existing single accessible ground floor toilet is woefully inadequate. This also has a baby change facility however this then limits availability to mobility limited users (and vice a versa).

Just one accessible toilet causes issues when it has become blocked or broken, or is needed for a prolonged period, and someone has an urgent need and limited mobility, all generating un-needed anxiety and risk of toileting incidents. Our regular attendees include twenty five adults with learning disability, people who use walking frames or wheelchairs, parents/carers with toddlers and pushchairs and those with reduced mobility. At times we may have 6 -8 significantly mobility impaired people on site, and up to 15 pre-school children

TCV with Airedale Architects has undertaken a through design process and secured Planning Permission and Listed Building consent to build a small toilet block. This comprises three toilet cubicles (one standard accessible), each with a hand wash basin, a further multiple user handwashing area for gardeners and young visitors who just need to get clean. All areas will be linked by a covered walkway. The building can be locked and shuttered for out of hours security.

This will be a timber frame building, with a green roof, designed to complement the adjacent Roundhouse and timber frame café shelter and bike shed. It will be robust and able to cope with intense and at times muddy usage. It will be located between the circular seating area and the café shelter, next to the pedestrian gate.

This new block will greatly improve the accessible provision for site users, reduce queuing at busy times (break times and open events, the current accessible toilet is located directly off the café entrance, a pedestrian circulation pinch point) and provide future flexibility including out of hours letting of the outbuildings without the need for access to the main building.

Construction costs are rising, the project is out to tender, but may costs us £95,000. With the Roundhouse individual donations were 15% and vital demonstrated to other funders that we had “community support”. If you can, please show your support, every £5 is much appreciated.
