Lent Appeal to support those suffering deprivation and isolation in the Diocese of Guildford

Dear Friends,
We are all noticing the effects of inflation, but for some it is having a greater impact on their lives than for others. While Surrey and the surrounding counties are perceived as universally affluent, beneath this shiny veneer may communities and groups are facing significant difficulties and are often overlooked.

The number of food parcels handed out in south east England by food banks who are part of the Trussell Trust increased in 20022/23 by 35% compared to the previous year and the number of children eligible for free school meals increased by 10%.

The latest report by Surrey County Council, Economy, Employment and Derivation reveals that while 8% of older people in the county are affected by income deprivation, in some areas it is as high as 40%. It is a similar picture with children effected by income deprivation with parents reporting to ‘regrettable strategies' including using debt, cutting back on food or skipping meals altogether to make ends meet.

The Bishop of Guildford’s Communities Fund is here to support and enable parishes and other church-linked organisations which reach out to support the vulnerable and marginalised. Last year we made six grants totalling £21,000 to different projects throughout the diocese - something we were only able to do as a result of your generous donations to last year’s Lent Appeal and collections from licensings and confirmations.

So could I ask both congregations and individuals to dig deep and consider how you can help support these two vital causes. You can donate now by clicking on one of the green buttons at the top right of this page. This work is only possible thanks to the generosity of our donors.

As ever, we are incredibly grateful for your support.

Bishop Andrew
