Why is cash assistance needed?

Displaced people who are seeking international protection in the UK are at risk of becoming homeless and destitute at various points in their asylum journey. This group is extremely vulnerable, as unlike others who experience destitution and homelessness, they have no access to public funds (NRPF), meaning they cannot access statutory services, hostels, or benefits, so when things go wrong, there is no safety net.

For destitute and homeless refugees, cash is a lifeline — Our cash assistance fund aims to help refugees cover their most urgent and immediate needs until they can resolve their situation or receive social support. Cash puts the decision making about what is most needed into the hands of the people being assisted. It has the added benefit of feeding back into the local economy when refugees buy the things they need.

Refugee Survival Trust is one of the few organisations in Scotland dedicated to providing cash assistance to refugees. We also provide community based temporary accommodation.

How will this benefit individuals and families?

Cash assistance offers immediate respite from appalling hardship and emotional distress, while efforts are made to find a route out of destitution. This cash helps people cope whilst they seek advice to resolve their circumstances. Most cash is used for essential living costs like food, simple hygiene items, phone chargers, SIM cards to call loved ones or get online, essential to maintain contact with support services and legal representatives. The difference between having nothing in one’s pocket, no financial freedom at all, and having some hard cash is not to be underestimated.

How the funding will be spent

We are in the right place at the right time to help people at their most vulnerable.

We are a small, flexible Scottish charity with minimal overhead, who use fast, digital methods to get cash to people in crisis.
