Here is Randolph CaldecottHe is our star!!!His father wanted him to work in a bank. He wanted to be an artist. He wanted to make people laugh, he wanted to hunt, and he wanted to travel. So he did what his dad wanted him to in the day, studied art at night and finally went on to live his dreams! He travelled all over Europe to work and he went to America too. He lived in Whitchurch in his formative years, aged 15 to 21. Then went to Manchester and from there aged 24 to London. He drew and painted and laughed and had fun. He became a famous illustrator of children’s books and funny travel books. His publisher F. Warne and Co. said about him, “added to technical accomplishment he had a spirit of fun and a sense of the joy of life”, which shined through all his work and make his illustrations a pleasure for all ages. His formative years from 15 to 21 were lived in Whitchurch and the surrounding villages. He loved the country side and its pastimes. He drew upon all his times riding and enjoying country life in his later work as an artist. You can see Whitchurch's lovely High Street in his book The Great Panjandrum. Come and see lovely Whitchurch with its local shops and beautiful park, canal and surrounding villages for yourself and enjoy the festival too.
