Informal and Fun Singing and Social Groups for Anyone Over the Age of 50 in the Vale of Glamorgan

With Music in Mind provides singing and social groups in the community for individuals over the age of 50. The sessions last 2 hours - an hour of informal group singing led by a musical director, followed by refreshments and then an hour of social activity (e.g. quizzes, musical performances, talks from outside speakers) . More recently, gentle exercise and social groups have also been introduced, with exercises that can be done standing or seated and can easily be adapted of the needs of each member. The aim of the organisation is to reduce social isolation and loneliness, and to improve physical and mental wellbeing.With Music In Mind is based on a wealth of evidence that shows that group singing and social interaction has many benefits including reduced stress, reduced loneliness, improved mood, improved memory and increased confidence as well as improved lung health. Anyone over the age of 50 is welcome, singing ability or current level of fitness is not important.

Why the community needs us
Feedback from group members demonstrates that those who attend our groups have improved confidence and mood, reduced loneliness and reduced stress. Carers of those living with dementia have said that these members enjoy the sessions, enjoy meeting other people and often spend the rest of the day singing the songs that we sing in group.

Our impact on the community
Approximately 120 older people currently benefit from attending With Music In Mind weekly session, including those living with dementia, depression and anxiety,or other mental or physical health conditions, those who have been widowed or may be lonely and older people with Down's Syndrome and those with learning difficulties.

Volunteers needed

We have an opportunity for a welsh language volunteer to work from home and translate a few sentences from English to Welsh for our social media.
