About the appeal

The statutory free school meals scheme does not apply to pre-school children so First Steps raises funds each year to ensure that our young children, from poorer families, eat at least one good meal a day, which helps them to benefit most from learning and development opportunities in the nursery. This project also helps families on low incomes to provide a nutritionally balanced diet for their children, introduces children to a broad range of meals and helps to develop healthy eating habits.

How the funding will be spent
We need to raise £8,000 for November 2020 to March 2021 to provide free, nutritionally balanced midday meals and healthy snacks for pre-school children in our day-care settings from families on low incomes who would qualify for free school meals (not available for pre-school children). It costs £3 per day to pay for a young child to enjoy a hot nutritious meal in the middle of their day and healthy snacks at break time.

How this will benefit the community
Research shows that the early years are the most effective to improve the life chances of children in disadvantaged communities, such as those where First Steps provides quality, inclusive child care and family support in Bath. The percentage of children living in poverty in Twerton (36%) and Southdown (29%) is the highest in Bath & North East Somerset. Children's food preferences and eating habits are formed early in life so our free nutritious meals can be critical for health and development.
