Sheffield Hatters were formed in the early 1960’s and became the first Women’s Basketball team in England. Since then the club has developed into the most successful women’s sports club in the country due to our domination of English Women’s Basketball since the early 1990’s. Hatters were the first women’s basketball club in the country to gain Sport England’s Clubmark Accreditation.
The first lady of English basketball, head coach Betty Codona OBE retired from senior basketball in 2009 following a career which saw her coach over 500 National League games – a record for an English coach – and won 40 National titles. Betty's legacy remains the driving force behind the club and is admired by all members of the club.
Sheffield Hatters is more than a club, it is a family. We provide sporting opportunities for players of all ages irrespective of ability or financial means and nurture their development. Over the years hundreds have trained and played with the club. Importantly, we offer a warm welcome to all potential players, supporters and enthusiasts.
Continuing the family commitment, ability and enthusiasm the head coach is now Vanessa Ellis, Betty’s daughter, who has coached the GB U20 side, is the current GB Senior Assistant Coach and also Head Coach of the England senior side.
The club has a reputation for providing playing and coaching opportunities for girls and women of all ages. The strong junior development programme, with teams from under 10 and, up to under 18, has been so successful that many young players move into the senior team and go on to win international honours. This is mostly due to our senior players and coaches being involved with the local community and regularly visiting many Sheffield primary and secondary schools.
In 2008 The club became a charity and this has allowed the club to evolve and offer more to the community in and around Sheffield.
Sheffield Hatters are managed by a committee comprising of a dedicated group of volunteers (parents, players and coaches) who are involved in all major decisions on how the club is run.
