Sponsor a Slate aims to raise £10,000 towards the cost of vital repairs to the Master's House at Llanfyllin's historic Workhouse - one of the finest in Britain and home to a flourishing community enterprise. Along with grant funding it will allow us to repair the leaking roof, restore the fine classical cupola and begin internal refurbishment. You can sponsor any number of slates from two (localgiving's minimum donation). We'll be pleased to record the names of our supporters.

How the funding will be spent

Repairs to the fine slate roof will take priority, starting with erection of scaffolding. We estimate there are 10,000 slates: we'll retain as many as we can, but first we need to remove them to repair the timbers and replace them before fitting new rain goods. The cupola will be built on the ground and then put in place. The roof repairs will cost up to £55,000: that will make the building will secure, but we aim to raise another £25,000 to make the two upper storeys usable again.

How this will benefit the community

The Workhouse houses 16 workshops, a 24-bed bunkhouse, a community venue and gallery as well as the Workhouse History Centre: Wales's only workhouse museum. Its field and garden are used for events, from music festivals to horse shows. The Master's House forms the hub of the building, linking the four courtyards and wings: on its ground floor is the café-bar, the heart of our activities. Its repair will make safe the historic building and allow a community enterprise to survive and grow.
