Empowering young people to take control of their lives, develop a positive outlook and be happy!
YES provides a 6 day a week drop-in information, advice and support service to young people aged 11 to 25, offering a free, confidential service in a welcoming, friendly environment. Support includes counselling, advocacy, mentoring/befriending with the philosophy of empowerment; alongside community involvement. Working with some of the most vulnerable young people in Brixham over a range of issues, supporting their transition into adulthood, in uncertain times, our provision is unique in Torbay
Why the community needs usBrixham is a small, isolated, seaside town with areas of high deprivation lacking opportunities for young people. With a growing sense of marginalisation, mental health and drug related issues are increasing. YES offers a safe haven where young people feel valued, find friendship and understanding, talk, get practical help and encouragement to move forward in their lives. This alongside organising a range of community events gives us a reputation of breaking down barriers and building bridges.
Our impact on the communityLast year we offered 2400 hours of open access support, helping over 400 clients, dealing with 3358 issues; delivering training to 723 contacts. We supported 28 homeless young people and worked with other agencies to secure them housing. Our young volunteers increased by 50%, and achieved a whopping 2694 hours locally! We hosted our 5th annual BRIXAWARDS evening to celebrate the successes of young people in our community - a fun,red carpet event for 250 people organised by the young vols group.
We welcome volunteers of all ages and experience. Our young volunteers meet every Wednesday evening and organise a variety of events from soup runs for the homeless to massive family fun days for our community. A lively, fun group of over 30 young people aged 12 to 25 - come and find out more! If you are an adult and would like to work with young people, pop in and have a chat and we can discuss how you could be involved, especially if you have special skills and could run creative workshops.
