Watson Scout Centre Redevelopment & Improvement

North Yorkshire Scouts are raising money to develop and improve the Watson Scout Centre. We are asking donors to buy a virtual brick or brick at £5 each that will contribute towards us meeting out £300,000 target to redevelop the Watson Scout Centre.

The Watson Scout Centre, which is in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, is owned and managed by North Yorkshire Scouts. Opened in 1969 it has supported has benefitted young people and adults from across the UK, from within Scouting and many other organizations. The Centre is situated in the picturesque village of Carlton-in-Cleveland, near to the main Stokesley to Thirsk Road (A172) and on the edge of the National Park. It is a substantial stone building which was originally a Manor House (Grade II listed) converted and extended to provide mixed accommodation for training and Scouting activities on a self-catering basis, and is used all year round to support our unpaid volunteer leaders and over 5,000 young people who are members of North Yorkshire Scouts.

What we plan to do
We wish to replace the wooden ground floor rear extension and replace it with a more permanent energy efficient building and provide even more opportunities for adventure to young people. If we do not replace the wooden extension, it will mean that our indoor sleeping capacity would reduce from 36 beds to 28 and we would not be able to provide facilities for young people with mobility issues.

The new building would afford not only accessible sleeping accommodation and toilets and showers for those with mobility issues, but it would also widen the Centre's scope to develop further use by the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and hopefully become a recognised Centre for camping when undertaking expeditions in the North York Moors National Park.
