Fun and excitement for disabled children and young people alongside their non-disabled peers
We are passionate about creating chances for Gloucestershire's disabled children and young people to show that they have talents to offer, not just needs to be met. We run the Of Course We Can programme - quad bikes, cooking, making music videos, wild camping etc. Exciting group experiences alongside non-disabled peers that boost disabled young people's confidence and change the way they see themselves. OUR BIG PROJECT CURRENTLY IS THE MOBILOO - FOR DISABLED ADULTS TOO - so they can go places.
Why the community needs usOutside of their families many disabled children and young people only get to spend time with people who are paid to be with them. We promote ways in which they can explore interests and activities with people who simply choose to be with them - especially their non-disabled peers. We believe it is not enough to be 'cared for'; fun, friendship and excitement are crucial to full lives. And meanwhile, parents get a well-earned break to recharge their batteries.
Our impact on the communityYoung people say: I like a bit of adventure and trying out things that are a bit dangerous. I drove a Land Rover; it made me feel big and powerful and like the world is my oyster. People listened to my ideas. I like making new friends. Parents say: He is more prepared to try out new things. This has opened up the future for us. He is more assertive, confident, prepared to initiate and suggest ideas. I am rested, relieved and happy. She feels great about herself. Anything is possible.
