CAfS promotes low-carbon living, energy saving and reduced use of fossil fuels in Cumbria
We run practical projects that help Cumbrians to reduce their carbon footprint. We're best known for helping people use less energy in their homes - from our annual Green Build Festival to draught-proofing schemes. We run training courses, workshops and advice sessions to give people the skills to make real changes in their lives - from sustainable building methods to flood retrofitting and community energy. We also help promote the work of sustainability groups across Cumbria.
Why the community needs usSince we were founded in 1998, we've been working closely with Cumbrian people and groups to help them reduce their energy use, saving money for consumers while also tackling fuel poverty in the county and the causes of climate change. Some of our recent projects are helping Cumbrians become more resilient following the floods of December 2015, with practical support to make their homes and community buildings cope better with future extreme weather, while improving their energy efficiency.
Our impact on the communityFor nearly two decades, we've been empowering Cumbrians to tackle climate change. With a reputation as a charity that delivers results, we attracted £1 million from the Big Lottery Fund for a 3-year project, for example, with real benefits: we and partners started a community bus scheme, introduced electric bikes, kick started community energy schemes, engaged 400 people in growing their own food, draught-proofed 250 homes and saved 850 homes money on their energy bills.
We actively welcome new volunteers to help us spread the word about our projects, to do online research for us, and to help out at events, among other things. If you can spare a little time or a lot, please get in touch!
