PLYMOUTH DISABLED BOWLERS CLUB
Accessability for the disabled to the sport of Bowls.
To promote the game of bowls to people with all disabilities. We run two sessions per week at the Mayflower Centre, Wednesday and Saturday at 9.30am. It is a very happy club, and there is opportunity for competitive play for those that can reach a higher standard. We have been so well patronised , that on occasions we haven't had enough room because of lack of rink space, but this will all change with the opening of the Life Centre later this year which will have 8 rinks. Equipment provided.
Why the community needs usWe provide a very happy Bowls Club in Plymouth at the Mayflower Centre, for all disabilities, and we have 11 purpose built wheelchair buggies available, 2 of which have motors, giving much more freedom and independence for the players, but of course 2 is not enough. We have seen peoples' lives changed by the provision alone of this club. There are members that would otherwise have no access to sport or any social life if it wasn't for this club.
Our impact on the communityA lot of our helpers are also disabled, as are most of the committee. Quite a few of our members also play bowls alongside the able bodied in the main Club and compete in the mainstream bowls leagues and competitions. We have at present also got three International players within the Disabled Club. This Club and the equipment we purchase gives a lot of happiness and also a purpose in life, which quite a few did not have until they joined our Club.
