An award-winning theatre and media company creating work by people with many different abilities.
Freewheelers Theatre and Media is an integrated theatre company which brings together disabled and non-disabled performers and supporters, production teams and the local community. We aim to change lives and perceptions of disability, and break down barriers, through high-quality, hi-tech, innovative theatre, dance, music and film. We run weekly workshops for everyone, currently in Leatherhead and Cobham. Our members range in age from 13 up - we have no upper age limit.
Why the community needs usWe work with primary schools to give children a better understanding of disability, and with special schools to inspire and widen horizons. We take performances out into schools and community centres, making connections and widening social contacts. As members of Disability Arts in Surrey (DAiSY) we collaborate with community organisations across Surrey. We have many wonderful volunteers and are proud recipients of the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service.
Our impact on the communityWe offer a long-term, developing involvement in dance, drama, music and film-making, and opportunities for individuals to help with running the company and improving their life skills. People can gain experience with us that moves them on towards obtaining work, or they can make a bigger and bigger contribution to our evolving performance experience and widening portfolio of work. By working together on artistic activities, we find companionship & laughter, and change people's lives.
