We promote, conserve and develop our local park for the benefit of residents and wildlife.
The Friends of Garston Park are a close community group of local residents whose sole aim is to promote, conserve and help develop our local park.We have managed to improve Garston Park by planting more trees, wildflower meadows and spring bulbs. We raised funds to install a new notice board and new benches. We helped with other community groups to paint the boards around the football pitches. We installed 2 plant boxes under both notice boards and maintain the flowers in them throughout the year.
Why the community needs usWe promote the park and try to incorporate and maintain features which benefit users. We try to keep residents informed about developments and to involve them in activities.
Our impact on the communityThe park is surrounded by houses, so all these people have an interest in the park; it is also a route to shops, leisure centre and the centre of Garston. Although the park is small, it provides opportunities for sport and informal recreation and also for opportunities to enjoy open space and some tranquility. We try to ensure that these needs can be met without conflict.
There are needs for skills in running the organisation and also practical skills in managing a small park's requirements - ideas for landscape design, knowledge of wildlife and fauna, litter picking etc.
