Being a parent is very rewarding. But at times, it can seem overwhelming. Home-Start Slough (HSS) supports local families with children under five who are going through difficult times. Our specially-trained volunteers are a lifeline, providing friendship, help and practical support to families suffering from stress and crisis. This includes mental health issues, physical or mental disability, deprivation, family breakdown, single parenting, multiple births, abuse and neglect. Why the community needs us
Our aim is to prevent crisis and family breakdown by offering support to parents who are struggling to cope with difficulties in their lives and who, for whatever reason, aren't getting the help they need. Very often we're the last chance they have. If families crumble, communities disintergrate and children suffer. That's why our volunteers work with parents at home to help them cope with the stresses and strains of parenthood so they can be stronger and their children can be happier. Our impact on the community
In 2014, our volunteers provided non-judgemental, life-changing support to nearly 100 vulnerable families in the local area. We have given parents the confidence and skills they need to cope with their daily lives and enabled children to grow up in a happy and stable environment. We are the biggest local voluntary organisation that recruits and trains volunteers to provide a helping hand and a listening ear to struggling families with children under five.
We always need more volunteers who are parents themselves, to help us support local families who need our service. They come from all walks of life and attend an 11-week training programme prior to being matched with a family. No qualifications are necessary, just the ability to listen, empathise and share your experience of being a parent. We ask our volunteers to commit to two or three hours per week to visit a family at home. Please contact the scheme for more information.
