Helping Reading parents give their children the best possible start in life
Home-Start Reading volunteers provide dedicated support for families who need it, whether due to isolation, post natal depression, poverty, family breakdown or other reasons.
The charity recruits and trains volunteers from the local community to visit families who have at least one child under 5 years of age, in their own homes. The families are all going through a tough time and have asked for help, and the support is tailored to their individual needs.
They also provide courses for parents to be and new mums who are struggling emotionally, as well as occasional outings and other ad hoc activities.
Impact on the community
As a result of Home-Start Reading's work, families are empowered to cope better with their challenges and difficulties. Parents are equipped to make better use of local services when they need help and feel less isolated.
Volunteering with Home-Start Reading can provide a great stepping-stone to future employment, or a fulfilling transition into retirement, and the Volunteer Co-ordinators are available to provide support and encouragement.
It's all about the community supporting the community, with positive outcome for everyone involved.
