Jacari provides free home tutoring to children who speak English as an additional language
Jacari is an innovative charity that matches up student volunteers with disadvantaged children aged 6-16 who don't speak English as their first language and are struggling at school. Our volunteer tutors spend an hour a week helping a child with their language skills. Our aim is to improve the lives of these young people by increasing their language ability, general confidence and motivation, as well as their ability to engage with and contribute to school life.
Why the community needs usOur programme not only has a positive impact on the pupils we work with directly, but can also build the language skills and confidence of the pupils' families, which in turn can help them to participate more fully in the school and wider community. Furthermore, our volunteering programme helps build links between the university and the local community.
Our impact on the communityIn Bristol, we currently support 100 pupils from 5 partner schools, which are located in some of the most deprived areas of the city. This one-to-one support has been proven to increase academic performance at school and raise the children's confidence and aspirations. Our programme also delivers huge benefits to the volunteers, including improving their employability and developing their sense of community.
