A helping hand to healthy eating

Project Food is about good food and good health. It is about the importance of cooking, eating and sharing proper food. It is also about improving our understanding of the links between the food we eat and health we get to enjoy. We run free cooking groups to teach people how to cook from scratch and understand food labelling better. We provide information on healthy eating and help people to overcome difficulties they have cooking and helping people they care for to eat well. We encourage people to eat together and give them the chance to try new foods in a fun, non-threatening way to help them to improve their diets. We run a food information centre and veg shop in Axminster.

Why the community needs us
We help people to turn around their lives: people struggling with ill health because they lack the skills or confidence to eat better. We show them that it doesn't need to be complicated. We have helped many people to reverse their diagnosis of pre-diabetes; supported people with severe and chronic mental health problems to feel better as they eat better; and we have helped hundreds of young people to develop the skills they will need for good health for the future.

Our impact on the community
People have better diets so are much healthier. The people who come to our sessions not only have better cooking skills and knowledge of healthy eating, but they also have increased confidence, better self esteem and develop life skills which make them more employable. Often when men are widowed, or their wives become sick, they are totally unprepared to look after themselves. Over 50s and carers sessions help them develop skills to feed themselves and their partners well and be less isolated.
