Running Deer is a Devon based Community Interest Company established in 2011 to provide opportunities for children, young people and adults including those at risk of exclusion; and local people & communities living in rural isolation without easy access to education, employment or training.
We provide access to learning outside the classroom, training, volunteering, life skills opportunities and work experience in traditional and rural skills, bushcraft and survival skills, animal assisted interventions, woodland and land conservation and related activities.
Running Deer School is an Independent School for Special Educational Needs providing high support specialist education for young people in Devon. Our practical skills and therapeutic education enables young people in Devon to overcome barriers to learning; designed to stimulate and challenge them, supporting their personal development, improving confidence, self esteem, communication, social and emotional well-being.
A student centred approach, individual timetables and high support programmes provide the best opportunities for young people to thrive in a nurturing environment. We specialise in working with students with Autism, learning, social, emotional and behavioural difficulties, ADHD, Oppositional Defiance Disorder (ODD), Attachment and Trauma, mental health issues and those considered hard to reach.
Running Deer School is a Trauma Informed School. Why the community needs us:"Progress comes from doing things differently:. Running Deer is certainly different! Our School supports children with Autism, ADHD, mental health difficulties, social emotional and behavioural difficulties. We work outdoors and Butterdon Wood plays a vital role in enabling our students to engage in activities and education. We continue to work with adults through specific projects, including rural skills, equine assisted interventions, green woodworking and bushcraft.
Our impact on the community:We have helped hundreds of children, young people and adults over the years, enabled them to go on to find employment, integrate better into society, learn new skills in a nurturing environment, become better human beings... All our work relates to people with health issues whether its autism, trauma or mental health issues We have a proven track record of delivering results as some of the testimonials and stories show.
Our project Dartmoor Log Bank needs volunteers to deliver logs to families in fuel crisis, to help in the yard and other duties relating to this project.
