Rebuild Schoolhouse Bridge, the Montgomery Canal's last blocked bridge in Shropshire
The project to rebuild Schoolhouse Bridge is a major step in reopening the Montgomery Canal to mid-Wales. The bridge is in the middle of two miles of dry and derelict canal and is the last lowered bridge on the canal in Shropshire.
The beautiful and historic Montgomery Canal runs for 35 miles from Newtown, Powys through Welshpool and Llanymynech to near Oswestry, Shropshire, where it joins the ever popular Llangollen Canal and the rest of the 3,000 + miles of the UK waterways network. Derelict from the 1930s; restoration began in 1969 and now 60% is nearly restored. The canal is noted for its canal-age locks, bridges and aqueducts and its valuable waterway flora and fauna.
The reconstruction of Schoolhouse Bridge is our next major work. Volunteers have started on the preliminary site works and the main work is due to start in March 2021.
Our project team has planned reconstruction with specialist contractors where necessary but to keep the cost down will use skilled and other volunteers where possible.
