FoodCycle Lewisham

FoodCycle Lewisham tackles food waste, hunger and loneliness. Our project founded and managed by local charity Rushey Green Time Bank has been serving meals in Catford since 2016. Until March this year, we would host over 50 guests a week for a nutritious, sit down, three-course meal.

Impact: To date we have served over 10,000 meals to 6,000 guests saving 13 tonnes of food from going to waste. That’s the carbon dioxide equivalent of driving five times round the earth’s equator.

Our community meals had to stop in March due to Covid-19; some of our guests are considered vulnerable and it was not safe to continue bringing people together for a community meal.

We re-opened as a cook & collect service from the Lewisham Irish Centre, offering a hot, vegetarian meal to take away every Saturday between 2-3pm. Our partners at Catford Fridge Station hand out any extra surplus food for guests to also take away.

The need for food during the winter months is due to increase, and around one in six (17%) parents in London have children already living in low or very low food security.
Some people are having to decide between the cost of food or fuel to heat their homes, and more and more people in Lewisham are likely to need extra support.
We know from a brief pause (and our delivery service in the summer, before reopening as a takeaway) how important our project is to the community and we rely on fundraising and wonderful volunteers to keep providing hot meals to people each week.
