At Slough YMCA we provide supported accommodation for homeless young people between the ages of 18 and 30 with the aim of helping them through their toughest times which will hopefully lead them to independent living. Through our community hub project, The Hangout, we try to foster a greater sense of community cohesion by bringing members of the local community together in one venue regardless of their race, colour, sex or background.
Why the community needs usSlough YMCA has been working at the heart of our local community, supporting homeless young people for over 20 years. During this time Chalvey, the most deprived ward in Slough, has experienced very complex social change. 40% of residents are from minority ethnic groups, some 40 languages are spoken, and large numbers are new UK residents. Our aim for this project is to support children and young people to improve their chances in life, through education, training and community projects.
Our impact on the communitySlough YMCA's project "The Hangout" has been a finalist for The South East Community Empowerment Awards 2011.
The effectiveness of our work with young people is being recognised - we have been asked to provide input for the Slough Youth Forum and the Local Economic Assessment
We consult extensively, we involve all the people organisations and agencies that we can, we are respected for our work (Colin Young was awarded Community Champion in 2011), and we are a trusted partner.
