A community managed 7 acre haven of grassland, scrub, trees & pond for wildlife & visitors to enjoy.
Snaky Lane Community Wildlife Group is a voluntary organisation established in 1993. Our aim is "to conserve Snaky Lane, its flora, fauna & wildlife habitats as a community resource, & to promote its use by local people as a place of quiet enjoyment & study of the countryside".Through our 10 year site management plan & support from both Guildford Borough Council as landowner & the Blackwater Valley Countryside Partnership, we have a clear vision for the future of Snaky Lane Local Nature Reserve.
Why the community needs usWe are an important asset to local people as an area of open space in what is otherwise a semi-urban area. From school children to dog walkers, everyone is welcome to enjoy Snaky Lane. Our nature trail & supporting guide is designed to plant the seed of conservation with youngsters. Hard surface paths & benches allow those less mobile to access the site. A picnic table offers local workers a place for lunch away from the desk or students somewhere else to do their homework.
Our impact on the communityOver the past 24 years, the group has successfully delivered many projects: Obtaining Local Nature Reserve status for the site;Digging a pond to increase habitat areas;Installing hard surface paths & benches to improve access for all;Introducing autumn livestock grazing as a traditional form of meadow management;Developing a nature trail & accompanying guide.Whether a visitor or a task volunteer, the local community have come together to recognise & value the importance of Snaky Lane LNR.
Volunteers are welcome to join our monthly practical tasks - we meet on site at 10.30am on the first Sunday of the month. No special skills are needed with all tools & training provided. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
