Provide year-round sports training and competition to athletes with a learning disability
Special Olympics provides year round opportunities for people with learning disabilities of all ability levels, aged 8 upwards, to train and compete in 25 sports. Special Olympics Isle of Wight started in 1987 and have been supporting athletes with a learning disability ever since. Currently, we train and compete in the sports of athletics, badminton, long mat bowls, table tennis and sailing and also provide a fitness session to promote heart health, flexibility and agility to our athletes.
Why the community needs usWe aim to enrich the lives of people with learning disabilities through participation in sport. Helping to develop motor, cognitive and technical skills as well as promoting exercise as beneficial to overall health. Through our sessions we are also able to encourage improved communication, social engagement and development through teamwork and coaching in a supportive environment to meet the individual needs of our athletes.
