A thriving mixed arts venue bringing you the best in live music, theatre and community events.
Square Chapel Centre for the Arts is a lively arts venue based in Halifax. In 1988, it was rescued from ruin and restored for use as a centre for the performing arts. The people of Halifax have taken Square Chapel to their hearts and pour into the building for concerts, theatre, lectures, comedy, art classes, and many other activities serving all sections of the community. Square Chapel also works with a huge network of over 160 volunteers from the local community.
Why the community needs usAlongside the professional programme, Square Chapel has a successful outreach programme. We have weekly Square Circle Art Classes, a Choirs, and a monthly Afternoon Dance for older people; Youth Theatre for children aged five to 12 years, visual Art Classes and Street Dance classes and the successful Write-to-Record music programme for young people. All of these activities and workshops help Square Chapel to continue its commitment to making the arts accessible to and inclusive of everybody.
Our impact on the communityIn 1988 six local theatre lovers bought a rundown Square Chapel for just £25. Their vision was to turn it into a vibrant Centre for the Arts for professional artists and the community. Today, Square Chapel attracts over 40,000 people per year to events and activities and has gone from being run entirely by volunteers back in 1995 to employing 26 full and part time staff and over 160 hard working volunteers.
Volunteering at Square Chapel is a great opportunity to see a variety of arts events, meet people, learn new skills - and help a worthy cause. The are various ways you can help out at Square Chapel: Bar work, Ushering, Serving tea and coffee, Garden maintenance, Building maintenance, Box Office, and Technical assistance. You can also show your support by becoming a Friend of Square Chapel from as little as £15 per year, and in turn will receive a number of benefits.
