The UK Lesbian and Gay Immigration Group (UKLGIG) promotes equality and dignity for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer and intersex + (LGBTQI+) people who seek asylum in the UK, or who wish to come here to be with their partners.
Why the community needs usUKLGIG helps people fleeing persecution in other countries because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. LGBTQI+ asylum seekers frequently suffer from shame and internalised homophobia, or have been victims of violence, exploitation or trafficking. In the UK, they are often isolated due to their immigration status, low incomes, sexual orientation or gender identity. UKLGIG helps them to feel more accepting of who they, build social support networks and access legal advice.
Our impact on the communityOur support helps LGBTQI+ people to increase their self-esteem, self confidence and mental health. Our one-to-one listening service and peer support groups help many people who have never previously been open about their sexual orientation or gender identity to start discussing these issues in a safe and non-judgemental environment.
