Swim for the Future

Our vision is for all children in Winchester to be able to swim 25m upon leaving primary education. The 'Swim for the Future' project will provide annual swimming courses to children in Years 5 & 6 at four target primary schools in the City of Winchester. It will 'top up' the swimming lessons offered under the National Curriculum (generally in Years 3 & 4), offering 5 hours of intensive instruction to small groups of children, led by Winchester City Penguins SC's very experienced swim teachers!

Why they need our service

Almost half the children living in Winchester district leave primary school unable to swim. This means they are unable to enjoy swimming for fun and fitness, and they are also vulnerable when walking or playing in or around water (e.g. at the beach or near rivers, as well as in leisure pools or water parks). The Swim for the Future project targets children in school years 5 and 6, in four communities where the need is greatest.

Plan and expected results

We aim for all participating children to be able to tread water for 10-20 seconds and swim 5m unaided by the end of the course; and for at least 2/3 of participating children to be able to swim 25m unaided by the end of the course. As well as helping children stay safe in and around water, acquiring these vital new skills can be very empowering. Further, schools report that children participating in our swimming courses are calmer, more focused and less disruptive on their return to class.
