Local Assistance Scheme
People in need approach us and we help them to secure second hand goods or to buy power, heat and light. This service is for the poorest households in the area. Our staff have a small budget still remaining from the authority for real emergencies i.e. electricity. We mainly assist people to access second hand furniture and recycled goods. When they are moving into unfurnshed housing and were previously homeless.
Why they need our service We provide crisis help to families and households who lack the basics in life. The funding for emergency assistance to the poorest households has been cut by our authority and we need resources for staf time to continue to provide this.
Plan and expected results The breathing space we offer helps people survive financial emergencies.
Every week we help around 7 households, some of whom may have dependent childre or have a health and care need. Many people are waiting for universal credit after first application and have no income or savings. The scheme assists people to eat and heat their homes for a period or resettle into a new homes after a period of homelessness.
Our advice helps to find solutions to avoid a financial crisis in the future.
