We promote volunteering across Wokingham Borough. We provide a free service to help recruit and place volunteers with local charities. Without the help of volunteers, charities cannot function, so our service to them is invaluable. We also run three community schemes; the Transport Scheme, which takes clients to medical appointments, Green 'n' Tidy, a gardening service for vulnerable and elderly people and Wokingham Town Mobility, who provides scooters to the elderly and disabled in the town.
Why the community needs usThe Wokingham Volunteer Centre provides an invaluable service to local people and local charities. Last year, we refered over 500 volunteers to help organisations across the Borough. Our three community schemes help reduce isolation and means the elderly can stay in their own homes for longer. We provide a further support, by signposted the elderly and vulnerable to befriending schemes, meals on wheels and other services whenever its needed.
Our impact on the communityVolunteering has been proved to have many benefits to both the volunteer and the charity they support. Volunteering is a way to make new friends, learn new skills, make a difference to something you care about, improve your CV and career prospects and boost self confidence. Studies show that people who volunteer regularly are likely to enjoy better health and even live longer! Volunteers support some of the most vulnerable people in our community and the benefit to them is invaluable.
We need more drivers for our Transport scheme which provides low cost transport for the elderly to hospital, the doctors, physiotherapy appointments and some social trips. Expenses are re-imbursed
