Yorkshire Dance Youth Company
We run free weekly dance classes for 11-19 year olds in East Leeds. Instead of focusing on technique we aim to inspire and empower young people through dance. Sessions explore real world topics such as identity and the courage to lead.
Through dance we teach skills such as creativity, teamwork, keeping healthy and leadership. We support those who are interested in a career in dance to access further training opportunities. We provide pastoral care to support those who struggle to participate.
Why they need our service
Yorkshire has some of the most deprived areas of the UK including East Leeds. Many of the young people from this area are dealing with issues in their personal lives which impact on their health and well-being, their confidence and their aspirations.
The young people face a number of barriers, such as course fees, transport costs and personal issues, which prevent them from enjoying and taking part in dance.
Plan and expected results
Over 30 young people attend our weekly sessions and over the last year we have supported young people to build friendships, fitness, confidence, enjoyment and valuable skills which could be applied to academic studies or to a career.
Last year the Youth Company had the opportunity to perform for audiences at 19 different venues across the city.
The audience's reaction was...
'The dancers have obviously worked very hard, they were all amazing!'
'Really enjoyed it, it was amazing'
