Improving the lives of people with dementia living in residential care and supporting relatives
We are a completely voluntary group trying to make life a little better and the days a little richer for those people in dementia care homes. We provide essential equipment for therapy groups and activity sessions. Also we organise enjoyable events that include and support residents and their families - transferring your loved one to residential care can be a worrying and bewildering time, We have no wages or overheads ever penny we raise goes to our beneficiaries, to put a smile on their face!
Why the community needs usDementia diagnosis is rising and mental heath budgets are under increasing pressure and struggling to provide basic care let alone the simple extras that can make such a difference to life in a home. We are a group of carers and ex carers and professional staff who have a vast amount of experience in "living" with dementia. Our impact on the communityWe began as a campaign group and successfully saved 100 residential places for enhanced dementia care for Sheffield. Since 2012 we built a magnificent sensory garden shown on BBCs flower pot gang, and created an interesting dementia cafe where we hold our events. Imagine being confined to the same rooms 24/7 - of course it would cause boredom, frustration and behavioural problems! Activities should be an essential part of life especially if we are to avoid the use of anti-psychotic drugs.
