Hi everyone, So as some of you may or may not know my nephew Harley was born with a rare congenital brain malformation called Schizenephaly which affects his movement, balance, strength and ability to verbally communicate. Harley requires support in all aspects of his life but regardless of his condition he is a gorgeous little boy with a fantastic smile and a wicked sense of humour. He began sessions at Conductive Education Bristol 3 years ago where he quickly developed his confidence, use of his arm movements and fine motor skills, sitting balance, aided walking and communication skills. The staff have a strong belief that all the children no matter what their disability have the ability to learn and take an active part in their lives. This development of skills along with their support to find the correct equipment and motivation has made a huge difference to multiple children’s lives. Harley has now got independence during play, communicating, eating and drinking that he didn’t have before. He can now play on his iPad at home thanks to his increased hand movements and his developed understanding of cause & effect enables him to play the games himself with specialist switches which he can activate with his hands. Conductive Education Bristol sessions are free and run as groups; offering friendship, peer motivation and praise with an enthusiastic and positive group dynamic. Through tasks and activities each child develops their gross and fine motor skills, self care skills, confidence, motivation, communication methods, problem solving skills and life skills. The children are encouraged to be independent in activities such as putting their own shoes and socks on/off which plays an important part in increasing their confidence and positive can do attitudes. They rely entirely on donations and fundraising to keep their groups going. Please help me to support their services so they can continue to support families and children like my Harley Bear :) x
