We are Group 7: Chloe, Fin, Anoth,Grace, Issy, Rachel, Sultan&Grace participating in National Citizenship Service and want to help support a local charity-Emily's Star. Our story.. In 2008 my mum fell pregnant. At the 20 week scan, we learned the baby had an echogenic mass, and that there appeared to be some deformity in his lungs. My mum had to have various tests and the conclusion of which was a diagnosis of "Edwards Syndrome" also known as Trisomy 18. It meant that there was a fault in the 18th Chromosone of the unborn baby. The consultant explained that the only option was feticide - this meant that they were asking to terminate the pregnancy because Edwards Syndrome "is not compatible with life". As a mother, she has always revolved her life around her children and failed to give up on her unborn child. At 34 weeks she went into natural labour and on 2nd February, 2009-The beautiful Adam James William Ford was born-weighing just 3lb13oz. He lived for a total of just 74 minutes and died naturally in his mums arms. The loss of Adam was prior to the set up of Emily's Star and we wish we had the information & support of this charity as we felt very much alone as T18 seemed to be virtually unheard of and we had so many questions. Emily's Star (1152520) was set up in 2012 by a lovely lady called Katie, to raise awareness after she lost her daughter, Emily to T18. The aims are to provide support to families of children with complex care needs and ensure that families no longer feel alone. One way they do this is by providing neonatal boxes to local neonatal units, which include gifts for the mother and baby. For more information please visit www.emilysstar.co.uk As a group we aim to not only raise funds but raise awareness for T18. We are planning on doing this by: bucket collections, a raffle, a cake sale, bag packing (supermarkets) and a 5k run. Please support us and donate to a charity that really can make a difference! Thank you very much.
