My name is David, I am 21 years old and, many may be surprised by this, but I was diagnosed with Acute promyelocytic leukaemia (APML) aka blood cancer a week before my 21st birthday.
One day I was celebrating my graduation, and the next week I was repetitively getting the same illness on and off. A trip to A&E and a blood test confirmed that I had a form of leukaemia and a couple of days later I was diagnosed with APML leukaemia.
I was then transferred to Milton Keynes Haematology Unit where I had to undergo chemotherapy. I lost a massive amount of weight and slept for days on end with my family not knowing whether I was asleep or in the process of losing my life.
As an active person, being bedridden and dependent on others for basic tasks was an unforeseen experience, However, thank God that with the constant support from family, close friends, and all the amazing staff at the Milton Keynes Cancer Centre, I made it out relatively unscathed.
Many months and many chemotherapy sessions later, on the 10th of May 2024, I finished my cancer treatment and I am now in full remission (cancer-free). I am incredibly fortunate and blessed to come out from this battle with my health and even my hair intact. But I understand, how many others are not as fortunate.
As a result, David Ade, Michal Janczara, Kazim Adedeji, Senad Khalfa and James Powell will be riding from London to Paris to raise money for Als Pals, a charity that supports patients undergoing cancer treatment, and personally were always generous with me.
We cycled 250km from Brighton to Dorset so now it is time to double that!
Al’s Pals, inspired by Alan Dumbell, provides crucial emotional support, friendship, and advocacy for cancer patients, along with their families and support networks. Serving the communities of Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, and Northamptonshire, this charity operates both within hospitals and at home, ensuring broad and accessible support. Their work is invaluable, and it's heartening to see similar organizations making a difference globally.
We chose Als Pal's because when I was in the hospital, I saw the impact Als Pals can make on individuals who did not have any friends or family support while undergoing chemotherapy. I love their work and they grow even bigger.
HOW CAN YOU HELP: We aim to reach our fundraising goal by September 30, 2024. Every donation, no matter how small, helps on the way to the goal.
We will document and keep everyone who supports us posted on the progress of our journey. Thanks,
David Ade-Odunlade
