YMCA Charity Boat Race

Help me and my crew of 16 salty sea dogs reclaim the prized Salford Dragon Boat Racing crown and raise vital funds towards the future of our 'Inspiring Futures' project which improves the lives of young carers across Salford. The total project running costs for 1 year stand at £23,757, and as of October 2015 our current funding ceases. If my colleagues and I raise at least £300 each we can make a significant dent in this figure. Young Carers and Young Adult Carers are children and young people aged 24 and under who provide care, assistance or support to another family member. They provide this care on a regular basis, and it is significant and substantial, requiring a level of responsibility that would normally be associated with an adult. Young carers are an ‘at-risk group’ vulnerable to poor health and reduced life chances, including ability to take on paid employment. The transition into adulthood for young carers can be complicated by lack of qualifications, limited social skills and a continuing caring role. It is believed that there are possibly over 3,500 young people across the city that are carrying out caring tasks. Our project will increase the confidence, social skills and employability of this group and engage with them to achieve positive outcomes in their education, physical and mental wellbeing, socialisation, future careers and independence by delivering work related social skills workshops and individual support over a 12 month period. Key Outcomes • All young people will have completed accredited training by the end of their engagement with the project. • All young people will have accessed a volunteering or training opportunity, a work placement or entered employment (part or full time) by the end of their engagement. • A measurable difference to the quality of each individual young person’s life will be made, including how they feel about their future, aspirations and opportunities.
