I’ve been telling everyone that it’s not part of the High Sheriff’s role to raise funds for charity, and here I am leaping from a 13 storey building in support of YouthBank. Well, it’s all been a mistake – but it’s very worthwhile. The mistake. When I was asked to join other Bucks figures abseiling from the top of the County Council Headquarters I thought it was that nice four storey building where I’ve been for various meetings over the last year. By the time I realised that the event was taking place at the adjacent skyscraper (this is Aylesbury and the Chilterns, so all things are relative) it was too late to turn back. But the training has been done, and I know that you just lean back and keep walking down! And it is very worthwhile. All funds raised will go to the Bucks YouthBank Fund, administered by the Buckinghamshire Community Foundation. In my High Sheriff visits I’ve seen the value of projects which encourage youngsters to get involved in their communities and which at the same time develop their life skills and sense of responsibility. YouthBank not only makes grants throughout the County but also engages young people in the decision-making. 10am on Saturday 7th September is ‘leap off time’. I hope that I shall start walking down those 13 storeys in the knowledge that youngsters in Buckinghamshire will be benefiting from my shaking knees.
