We help refugees and migrants in Hounslow, Kingston and Richmond to improve their English

Learn English at Home (LEAH) provides help to learn and develop English language skills to refugees, asylum seekers and migrants living across Kingston, Richmond and Hounslow.

Why the community needs us
LEAH reach across communities to help people that face barriers to accessing mainstream college and education. LEAH clients are disadvantaged by low-level English skills that makes accessing help and support to improve their families lives challenging.

Many of our clients are unable to access college due to child-caring or caring responsibilities, physical or mental ill health, experiences of trafficking, modern day slavery, or abuse and violence which leads to them being vulnerable and at risk. The insecurity resulting from this affects confidence in integrating with the wider community.

LEAH provide essential language skills that helps change people's lives. Our volunteers provide support and signposting that helps people make informed choices in finding and using the services they need, and in accessing future education and work opportunities.

LEAH clients are referred by a strong network of partners including GPs, health services, schools, refuges, hostels and work places who understand how important it is for clients to gain the language skills required to communicate their needs.

How we support our beneficiaries
Our volunteers deliver a one to one (1:1) service for vulnerable clients who face significant challenges and barriers to learning outside the home.

We also deliver community classes and remote online classes for clients who are able to learn in a community or class-based setting.

Our impact on the community
LEAH volunteer tutors help build the confidence of clients as they learn essential language skills that support them in better integrating with their community.

Clients are provided with the knowledge and language skills necessary to enable them to access local health, wellbeing, and community services.

New learners of English living in Kingston, Richmond, and Hounslow, benefit from improved wellbeing, reduced isolation, and from developing support networks that help them to access services for themselves.

Volunteers needed

We need volunteers to teach either 1:1 or in small groups. No teaching experience is necessary. All we ask is that you have a good standard of written and spoken English, and can commit to support a LEAH client for at least six months. An understanding or knowledge of the local Kingston, Richmond or Hounslow areas would be helpful. Full training is provided.
