About the appeal

Meet Trhas: One of Ethiopia's elite female cyclists winning both the individual and team time trials at the African Continental Championships in 2019. Sadly for Trhas, like a lot of people in Ethiopia, she was not safe and last year had to claim asylum in the UK and was not able to join a race for lack of a bike. Until she has a decision on her asylum claim she cannot return to international competitive cycling or join the Olympic Refugee Team. But Trhas is our community member and West London Welcome is not prepared to see her dreams dashed.

We approached London Marathon Events, who run the prestigious Ride London 100-mile cycling event on May 26th, and they've invited Trhas to join other elite riders at the front. Trhas is super excited - BUT to be able to be able to compete at her optimum level, we needed to seek help to get her kitted out.

Thanks to our initial campaign, we have now sourced her a bicycle, helmet and shoes (at a great price thanks to Simon Howes at the DAS-Hutchinson-Brother UK pro women’s team!) but now we need continued funding to get her the specialist clothing, equipment, tools, sport nutrition and supplements she needs. (Banned from working and claiming benefits and given just £8.86/week from the Home Office she cannot afford to buy these herself). We also need help to significantly improve her standard diet as well.
We are also looking to fund her indoor training and racing online. Our friends at Team Africa Rising, a non-profit dedicated to the development and promotion of African athletes are helping us source this at the very best prices!
