We are a charity working with adults with learning disabilities achieve potential through activities and engagement.
The Open Door Centre exists to make a positive difference in the lives of adults with learning disabilities, enabling our members to achieve their highest potential. We do this by providing a range of activities within a safe, supportive and non-judgemental environment, and members are involved in every level of decision making about the running of the Centre. Members are encouraged to be independent adults, and to understand their rights and choices, to become respected, confident, valued members of society.
The Open Door Centre recognises that people with learning disabilities have the same needs as the rest of society – to learn, to undertake meaningful and fulfilling work and to socialise with a wide range of other people.
We have 95 active attendees, aged 21-74, with an almost even split of men and women. Members live in a mix of housing; some live alone, with family, in Shared Lives, supported living with other adults with learning disabilities, residential housing with 24-hour support and a few in respite care.
