Bristol After Stroke is a small, local independent charity which helps to rebuild people’s lives after a stroke in Bristol and South Gloucestershire. Our services offer a unique combination of practical, social, emotional and psychological support to stroke affected people and their carers and loved ones.
Our vision is to ensure that everyone who has had a stroke can get the help they need to regain confidence, achieve a level of independence, and re-build a fulfilling life.
Why the community needs us
A stroke is sudden and shocking and affects every part of your life and is the leading cause of adult disability. A stroke can not only leave people with physical, and sometimes cognitive, difficulties, but they can also be left with low confidence and self-esteem and poor support. Even those without a lasting physical disability will tell you that the impact on their emotional wellbeing, daily life and planning for the future is huge. Without our services and support, many people in the area would be left feeling alone, vulnerable and lost after having a stroke.
Our impact on the community
Locally where we operate in Bristol and South Gloucestershire there are approximately 12,000 people that live with stroke and approximately 850 people have a stroke each year. Over the next year we expect to support over 1,400 individuals and their families and carers across Bristol and South Gloucestershire to rebuild their lives after a stroke. Our clients tell us they feel more confident, less isolated, better able to deal with their symptoms and feelings and, overall, better able to adapt to life after stroke.
