Charlie Is Running To Help Prevent Male Suicide

I was tracking a friend running The London Marathon last year on the app.

An “Enter Ballot For 2024” pop-up appeared on-screen.

High on the marathon day good vibes… I thought…“Why the hell not…oh...and I’ll never actually get a place”

I did get a place. And I’m running on Sunday.

Why Are You Fundraising Now?

I ran the London Marathon in 2011 and 2014 to support "Action on Addiction" - a great charity and cause close to my heart.

Having asked everyone I know to support me back then...I decided I better not push my luck. I have a ballot place...so decided that I would not fundraise this time.

However - as Marathon Day approaches - people are asking why I am not raising money for charity. I have no good answer.

Male Suicide

In 2005…I had to stop drinking. It wasn’t easy…but I had the right help at the right time.  I consider myself very lucky.

These days I hang around a lot with Alcoholics and Addicts (which is a lot more fun than it sounds...by the way!).

However, in (and out) of the sobriety circles I’ve lost friends who have made the decision to take their own lives.

I think of them often - and wonder what they might be doing if they had won the terrible battle they ultimately lost.

We All Know Someone Don't We?

• Suicide is the biggest killer of men under the age of 50.
• Suicide is the biggest killer of people under the age of 35 (75% of these are men)

So I thought I would do it for them, for ALL the people we miss.   

We can bring LIFESAVING HOPE to people in the moments they feel most most hopeless and helpless.
