Through a variety of carefully organised activities, we support and befriend those experiencing loneliness and isolation. Archway works within a framework of Christian values and service that recognizes that everyone is worthy of respect and acceptance. Archway provides a sense of belonging for those who feel unwanted, excluded and forgotten by society and the opportunity to make friends and meet people in a supportive environment.
Why the community needs usArchway (Oxford and Abingdon areas) is open to anyone experiencing the distress associated with loneliness. Loneliness can be debilitating and caused by external circumstances: mental or physical ill health, bereavement, relationship break up, redundancy and retirement. Sometimes, however, there may be no obvious external cause. Archway helps people to regain social confidence and contribute to society. Many of those who have been involved with Archway have gone on to volunteer at social events.
Our impact on the community'FRIENDS' & VOLUNTEERS give their feedback:"At first the loneliness made me feel I was a prisoner in my own home. Then it got worse and I felt I was a prisoner within myself. Archway opened the door of my cage." " I was abused as a child, bullied at school and found it hard to make friends. Coming to Archway means that for the first time in my life I feel I belong. People here genuinely care about what happens to me.""Volunteering with Archway helped build my confidence and get a job."
