Northampton | Community Support & Development
We set out to advance the development and education of pre-school children and children with special needs by the provision of educational and stimulating toys and equipment. We open three times a week during term time with occasional sessions in school holidays. It's free for people to join and most toys only cost 10p to £1 per week to borrow. All books are free. Community groups can join for an annual fee.
Why the community needs usWe are based in Spencer, Northampton which falls within the lowest 13%* of the most deprived areas nationally and the most deprived ward in Northampton. There is high unemployment in the area, many families on low incomes, a lack of education and skills training, barriers to housing and social services, single parents and a large number of families from multi-ethnic communities. NHS figures show 41% of children in Spencer live in poverty. *Gov.Index of Multiple Deprivation.
Our impact on the communityWe reduce these disadvantages by giving access to toys that otherwise members may not be able to afford to buy or have room to store. We have a large range of high quality toys for young children and babies. Our multi-cultural toys enable children to learn about and celebrate each others differences. Our toys for children with additional needs provide a much needed resource for families who would not otherwise have access to this often very expensive, specialist equipment.
