We aim to renovate the cemetery and promote its use by the local community. We work in partnership with local schools and community groups, the Borough Council and others to reduce anti-social behaviour in the cemetery, improve its appearance, enable people to access the history encapsulated there and to enjoy this wonderful green space.

Why the community needs us

Every improvement to the fabric of the cemetery contributes to the reduction in ant-social behaviour and helps people to feel safe when walking in the cemetery. The educational resources produced by the Friends encourage school children to take part in positive activities in the cemetery and to learn about Scarborough's heritage. The Friends bring in external funding for projects and give business to local traders, boosting the local economy. We also provide varied volunteering opportunities.

Our impact on the community

We've restored the Secret Garden, a unique Victorian rock garden, and the mortuary chapel, and have produced a high quality education pack which is downloadable from our website. We worked with Gladstone Road school to plant a 100 metre long wildlife friendly flower bed, and with Northstead school on the design and installation of a decorative archway over one of the entrances. Volunteer sessions are held monthly and we've recently been awarded funding to resurface paths in Manor Rd cemetery.
