BIRD: supporting arthritis research, education and patient engagement

The Bath Institute for Rheumatic Diseases (BIRD) is a charity working to improve treatment for patients with rheumatic diseases through funding medical research, providing education for doctors and healthcare professionals and organising engagement opportunities for patients in research and learning about new medicines and treatment. We have built a community of patients, last year over 5,000 listened to our podcasts. By making a gift to BIRD you are helping this work to continue and joining our many previous donors in helping us to help patients.

BIRD brings clinicians from the Hospital and scientists from the University of Bath together. We have been located with the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases (known affectionately as ‘the Min’) since 1975. Indeed, Bath has always been at the forefront of bone and joint disease research, education and patient care, as part of its history as a city with thermal waters since at least Roman times, and with one of the first national specialist hospitals in the country founded in 1738.

Rheumatology is the study and treatment of arthritis including a number of autoimmune diseases, pain disorders affecting bones, joints, soft tissue and tendons. There are more than 200 types of rheumatic diseases including rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, osteoarthritis and lupus.
