New Leaf Learning uses a nature-based learning programme enabling children to acquire the skills of Trying, Resilience, Understanding and empathy, Self-regulation and Teamwork (TRUST). This supports childhood growth in the classroom, with a view to seeing these children progress into adulthood as valued members of local communities and the local workforce. Often our children have experienced one or more adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), which, through no fault of their own puts them at a disadvantage from their peers.
The TRUST Programme is unique in that it supports not just children, but their parents/carers AND their teaching staff as well. It is designed to help the increasing number of children who have been struggling to engage with education. It offers exciting activities outdoors, on one day a week, over 5-weeks so that children can practise the skills, these include slack-line, den-building, fire, gardening and cooking as well as teaching them key relaxation skills through regular yoga sessions.
Teachers and support staff are introduced to training in trauma-informed practice and methods, enhancing the therapeutic learning experience of both the children and the parents. This training provides teaching staff with tools and techniques to support the children with the challenges they face. Teachers have reported significant improvements in their ability to understand, support, and address the needs of vulnerable children.
One of the points of difference between this programme and others is that the programme requires that parents engage in training for themselves. This training aims to provide strategies for managing anxiety as well as receiving support for behaviour management and self-regulation and it has had very positive feedback.
For the past three years TRUST has been supported by Courteenhall Estate and Roade Primary school. Over that time data has been collected that demonstrates the success of the TRUST programme. Schools have reported excellent results in the classroom, every single school that booked before has rebooked and results from the areas measured in the Strengths and Difficulties questionnaire indicate improvements reported by both adults and children.
Following the success of the last three years, New Leaf Learning is now looking for support from, and engagement with, local employers and individuals to enable the expansion of the programme in order to reach and support more local young people and their families.
Donations made to the New Leaf Learning Charity go directly to the children it aims to support. Historically, administration costs have been met by Courteenhall Estate and this is something it has pledged to continue to do in the future.
